News from the Vermont Democratic Party
The Vermont Democratic Party unequivocally and enthusiastically supports Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, President Biden’s pick for Supreme Court Justice.
The Democratic National Committee reported “Despite Republicans’ best attempts to smear Judge Jackson, this week’s hearings showcased Ketanji Brown Jackson’s impeccable qualifications to sit on the Supreme Court. From her background as a public defender to her family’s history of law enforcement work, her broad and deep experience makes her incredibly qualified to sit on the highest court in the land. The hearings have been a hypocrisy highlight reel from Republicans, and fact-checkers have been quick to call them out for their own records on dark money."
The Washington Post Editorial Board wrote: “During the hearings, Republicans such as Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (S.C.) have congratulated themselves for declining to treat Judge Jackson the way Democrats handled the nomination of Brett M. Kavanaugh. In fact, by the most relevant measures, Mr. Graham and a handful of other Judiciary Committee Republicans have handled themselves worse.”
In response to the hearings, VDP Chair Anne Lezak said: “Judge Jackson’s treatment by the GOP is appalling and nothing but political posturing to appeal to their electorate. When contrasted with Judge Jackson’s respectful and forthright responses, these sleazy attacks, dog whistles, and all-around falsehoods require us to remember former First Lady Michele Obama’s iconic statement: ‘When they go low, we go high.’ Judge Jackson persisted in taking the high ground throughout the grueling two days of hearings and we admire her spirit and strength.
“Judge Jackson represents the very best of our country. She is a brilliant and highly qualified jurist with an impeccable record. What American could not have been moved by Senator Cory Booker’s stirring statement near the end of the hearings, which showcased Judge Jackson's experience, brainpower, grace, and tenacity? He brought many to tears, including Judge Jackson herself.”
In his remarks, Senator Booker (D-NJ) stated: “You have earned this spot. You are worthy. You are a great American.”He referenced how abolitionist Harriet Tubman would look to the night sky, seeking a star that was a ‘harbinger of hope.’ “I thought about her. And how she looked up, she kept looking up no matter what they did to her she never stopped looking up. Today, you’re my star. You are my harbinger of hope. This country’s getting better and better and better. And when that final vote happens, and you ascend to the highest court in the land, I’m going to rejoice.”
The Vermont Democratic Party looks forward to celebrating Judge Jackson taking her well-earned place in history as the first Black woman Supreme Court Justice in United States history and the impact this will make on the future of our country.
